anna schimkat (mainz), born in darmstadt in 1974, is a sound & visual artist with a background in sculpture and music, working in the field of sound art through installations and performances. her work explores the relationship between sound, space, and perception, often resulting in large-scale installations and performances. her research-based practice incorporates historical contexts, often outside of institutions and in collaboration with small communities. using self-built instruments and field recordings, she creates spaces that heighten perception and invite interaction.
she lives in mainz and leipzig.
her work has been shown internationally at goethe-institut (damaskus, syr), 24 gauche series (montreal, can), ausland (berlin, ger), longbridge light festival (birmingham, uk), the vadehavsfestival (blavandshuk, dnk), galerie für zeitgenössische kunst (leipzig, ger), re:flux 16 festival, (moncton, can), festival experimentelle musik münchen (ger), zimmt (leipzig, ger) deutsches haus, (new york city, us), kunsthalle mainz (ger).
her work is also documented in a wide number of exhibitions and publications, with many audio documents released on labels such as fragment factory, scrotum records, michael barthel’s recordings for the summer or coherent states from athens.
